James Wood principal Sam Gross sent a letter last Thursday to students, parents and school staff, which was shared Monday by Steve Edwards, director of policy and communications for Frederick County Public Schools . Gross said in the letter that “architects and engineers have discovered a design flaw in one of the exterior walls of our main gymnasium that leaves it vulnerable to significant damage from high winds. As an abundance of caution, the main gymnasium has been closed for occupancy until further notice.
Gross goes on to say in the letter that repair work will take place as soon as possible, but there is no timeline for when the work will start or end.
On December 7, the Frederick County School Board designated a maximum amount of $64,346,221 for renovations at James Wood.
Thursday’s James Wood Christmas Tournament Championship game for women’s basketball and the James Wood-Harrisonburg men’s basketball game were moved to Frederick County Middle due to the issue.
This week, James Wood will play Kettle Run Tuesday in women’s basketball at Frederick County Middle, with the JV game at 6 p.m. and the varsity game at 7:30 p.m. Friday, boys’ basketball games will now take place in Handley. (JV 6 p.m., university 7:30 p.m.). Girls’ basketball games against Handley will be at Frederick County Middle (JV 6 p.m., varsity 7:30 p.m.).
James Wood, student activities coordinator Craig Woshner said in an email Monday that schedule changes for the coming weeks will be available as soon as details are finalized.
