TN: Special Sports Training for Tribal Students

Chennai, June 28 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Tribal Department of Tamil Nadu, in association with the district administrations, will provide special athletic training programs for tribal students.

As part of this project, the Kallakurichi district administration has launched a ten-day special sports training program for the children of the Ekalavya Tribal Welfare School in the Kalryan Hills.

The ten-day program aims to restore the confidence of children in tribal hamlets who are generally reluctant to participate in sports and games.

According to the Kallakurichi district administration, about 150 children will receive free training in volleyball, kabbadi, long jump, high jump, short throw, relay and rope gymnastics. Children will also be trained in traditional tribal sports like mallakhamb.

Kallakurichi District Collector PN Sridhar speaking to IANS said, “Students at Ekalavya Tribal School are receiving this sports training as a step to strengthen and improve their skills. The Kalryan Hills Tribal School will be equipped with skills in various games so that they can participate in national, national and international tournaments.

The coaches will be accommodated at the school premises as it would be difficult for them to reach the hills of Kalryan from Kallakurichi. Students, who are undergoing sports training, will also be accommodated in a hostel in the school itself, as leaving for houses in remote areas after dark will be risky due to wild animals in the area.

The state’s tribal department also faces these problems because almost all tribal schools are located either in forest areas or near forest land. The Tribal Department will organize sports training programs in all the tribal schools in Tamil Nadu after successful completion of the ongoing sports training program at Ekalavya Tribal School, Kalryan Hills in Kallakurichi.

State Tribal Department sources told IANS that the budget for the Tribal Student Athletic Development Program will be released from funds allocated for Tribal Student Health and Nutrition.
