BHUBANEWAR: In an effort to help inmates overcome the stigma associated with imprisonment and help them smoothly reintegrate into society upon release, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) launched the Parivartan – Prison initiative to Pride in Jharpada and Circle Jail Special Prison in Bhubaneswar. in Choudwar on August 15th.
The initiative, which coincided with the 75th Independence Day celebrations, was launched at Bhubaneswar Special Prison, Circle Prison in Choudwar, Puzhal Central Prison in Tamil Nadu, Chanchalguda Central Prison in Hyderabad and Poojappura Central Prison in Thiruvananthapuram, via a webinar by IOCL President, Shrikant Madhav Vaidya.
IOCL hired several sports figures including international chess player Padmini Rout, former national badminton champion and award winner Arjuna Abhinn Shyam Gupta, carrom champion K Srinivas and others to train inmates to to boost their confidence and self-esteem.
IOCL President SM Vaidya launched the initiative to provide training in badminton, volleyball, chess, tennis and carrom to help inmates build better lives. In the first phase, 129 inmates from various states will receive training.
Indian Oil will coordinate with the country’s prison services to facilitate the training program which aims to improve the physical and mental well-being of inmates, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic.
DIG Prisons Subhakanta Mishra said that inmates of Jharpada Special Prison and Choudwar Circle Prison will be trained in different games. Inmates who perform well in sports can even participate in local and other competitions upon release from prison, he added.
In a tweet, Padmini said inmates will be able to learn and benefit from playing chess and other sports through this unique initiative. CGM (HR) Debi Prasad Satapathy and other officials were also present.
